In the discharging period, the liquid electrolyte is pumped through electrodes to extract the electrons and to generate electricity. The electrolyte is stored in the tank during the storing period. During the charging period, PV panels, wind turbines, or grid input is used for providing electrons to recharge the electrolyte. The flow batteries store electricity in the tanks of liquid electrolyte that is pumped through electrodes to extract the electrons. The schematic view of the flow battery, an integrated ES system, which is used to store renewable energy, is shown in Fig. 1.20. Some recent works show the possibility of the use of flow batteries. However, the biggest issue to use flow batteries is the high cost of the materials used in them, such as vanadium. High-capacity flow batteries, which have giant tanks of electrolytes, have capable of storing a large amount of electricity.

Interest in flow batteries has increased considerably with increasing storage needs of renewable energy sources. The biggest advantages of flow batteries are the capability of pack in large volumes. Charging and discharging of batteries occur by ion transferring from one component to another component through the membrane. Flow batteries are a type of electrochemical ES, which consists of two chemical components dissolved in liquid separated by a membrane.
